2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
Reflections: Passing Your Torch
Did you know that this passage identifies the only two things on planet earth that are eternal? The first is people. Yes, we are eternal beings created by God which He so desires to know and love. The second is God’s Word that Jesus said will never pass away. The goal for the Christian is to work to combine these two eternals by helping people know the Word of God.
This combination has worked for over 2000 years since Paul wrote these words. The message Christ gave to Paul was passed on to Timothy who trained reliable leaders who taught others until the message of God’s grace came to you and me over all these generations. Now, it is our opportunity and responsibility to pass that torch of faith on to the next generation.
Who is in your sphere of influence that needs the message of God’s wonderful salvation? Your choice today is to wrap your life up in the things of this world that are destined for destruction or to participate in the stuff of eternity, namely, helping people know God’s Truth. It is a no-brainer.
If you need help, just read the following verses (3-6) that describe the loyalty of a solder, the lawfulness of a runner and the labor of a farmer. These three metaphors will show you how to get focused, set an example and sweat to bring your dreams for others into reality.
I love the way this section of Scripture ends in verse 7; “The Lord will give you insight into all this.” Since reaching others is at the very heart of Christ, He wants to join in the process and will guide you as you make the effort to reach out to others. So, get busy with full confidence knowing that His wind is at your back.
